Another method is to use a sealed pressure gauge or sensor to measure absolute pressure. Pump systems are sometimes affected by "water hammers," in which the opening or closing of valves sends shockwaves through the water, causing pressure transients or spikes that may be beyond the measurement range of pressure sensors. To prevent this, some pressure sensors can be fitted with throttling plugs to slow the flow of water and mitigate the effects of spikes. Some water pressure sensors can indicate that they have failed by sending a signal output out of range (below the lowest point or above the highest point).
